Reference Collection: Introduction

The Library holds, in each of our libraries, a collection of authoritative and scholarly reference material, in both print and electronic formats. The print material cannot be borrowed.

Using the Reference Collections

Reference items, are helpful for finding:

  • Background information
  • Definitions and spelling
  • Facts and figures
  • Translations
  • Statistics
  • Topical overviews of subjects

Reference Overview

UCD Library's reference collections include:

  • Dictionaries

  • Indexes
  • Yearbooks and annuals

Location

A General Reference Collection is located on Level 2 of the James Joyce Library.

The Law Reference is located on Level 2 of the James Joyce Library.

Other subject reference collections are available in the James Joyce Library as well as UCD's branch libraries. 

Searching for Reference Works

Use OneSearch to find print and electronic reference works.

If you know the exact reference work that you are looking for, put the title in inverted commas, such as "Dictionary of Irish Biography".

In the left hand panel the Book/eBook and Full Text Online options will be helpful to narrow results down to book style items and, if you wish, works available online.
