Sensory Study Room
The Sensory Study room on Level 3 of the James Joyce Library supports students with sensory needs.
It provides students with sensory needs the opportunity to regulate their responses to the environment they study in.
Features include:
- Variety of seating to meet individual needs
- Textured fabric walls to support acoustic management
- A calm environment, using a muted colour pallette
- Limited visual stimulus within the space
- Colour wheel lighting system - for users to control lighting locally
This room has 5 individual study spaces and can be booked for a maximum of 2 hours per day.
Sensory Transition Room
The Sensory Transition room on Level 3 of the James Joyce Library is for students who are finding self-regulation challenging. This space allows them to disengage, to regulate, and to re-engage again before moving to another space in the Library.
Features include:
- Variety of seating to meet individual needs, support movement and provide relaxation
- Walk way space for people who manage sensory load through pacing
- Sensory wall - to help manage sensory overload
- Textured fabric walls to support acoustic management
- A calm environment, using a muted colour pallette
- Limited visual stimulus within the space
This room has 4 individual spaces and can be booked for 30 minute intervals. If required, students may book a further slot later the same day.

Aim
UCD Library is actively engaged in helping to create a ‘University for All’, offering inclusive spaces for everyone in UCD. The redevelopment of the James Joyce Library is central to delivering that vision.
These sensory spaces provide students with sensory needs the opportunity to regulate their responses to the environment they study in.
