Self-Service: Books Self-Service

Self-Service kiosks

For standard loans and returns, users should use the self service option available in each of our libraries.

Self-Service kiosks allow you to borrow or re-issue books to your account. They are especially useful when the Library is open as a “reading room only” service.

How to Borrow a Book:

Self-Service KioskUse a self-issue kiosk

Tap Borrow Items on the screen.

As displayed on the screen, place your student/staff card at the reader.

The on screen instructions provide step by step assistance. If you have any problems using them, ask a member of staff for help.

At the end select Email or Print Receipt.

Why is it important to get a receipt?

  • Printing or Emailing your receipt is a record of the item you borrowed.
  • It tells you when the item is due back.
  • Click Logout as this closes your account so that no one else can borrow a book under your name by mistake.

Returning Books:

Self-Service Return chutes

How it works:
Simply place books in the chute, and your account will be updated immediately.

Where:

  • Inside the James Joyce Library - to the left of the Information Desk and at the Admission Desk.
  • Vet Library - in the lobby of the Vet Building.

Other UCD libraries

Please return books by the Kiosks or to the Information Desk during service hours.

External Self-Service Return Chute

The external return chute is located outside the James Joyce library so you can return your books without entering the library.
When items are returned via the external return chute, your account will be updated immediately.

When the library is closed books can be returned though the external return chute, outside the James Joyce Library.
Books from all library sites can be returned this way.

Why is the Self-Service machine not working for me?

There are a number of reasons why this may happen including when:

  • Items on your account are overdue.
  • Items on your account have been recalled for another user.
  • Items on your account have already been renewed as often as is allowed.
  • The book was not placed on the reader correctly.
  • Inter-Library Loans can only be issued or returned by Library staff. Please return to an Information Desk.
