Open Access: Research Ireland - Taighde Éireann OA Policy
Interim Open Access Policy Taighde Éireann - Research Ireland
The Irish Research Council and Science Foundation Ireland now fall under the joint funding body, Taighde Éireann - Research Ireland. Their previous open access policies have been replaced by this new interim Open Research Policy.
The new policy is in effect for grants awarded on or after 7th April, 2025.
Key differences in the new policy are that the Author Accepted Manuscript of journal articles must be deposited in an open access repository immediately on publication. Also, inclusion of a rights retention statement is encouraged, but not mandatory.
There are seven requirements relating to peer reviewed research publications (excluding long-form publications, book chapters, and review articles) arising in whole or in part from Research Ireland funded research.
- immediate open access
- immediate deposit in an open access repository (for example Research Repository UCD)
- application of a Creative Commons Attribution License (CC-BY)
- encouragement to retain the rights to the author accepted manuscript using suggested text from the policy
- article processing charges and permitted use of grant funds
- a statement on access to associated data, software etc.
- basic metadata requirements
There is encouragement to make any longform publications open access. Other topics addressed in the policy include research data requirements, open research practices, monitoring, compliance, and exceptions.
Researchers should read the Interim Open Research Policy of Taighde Éireann - Research Ireland in full, to ensure they meet all requirements.
For grants awarded prior to April 7th 2025, see the previous Open Access Policies of Science Foundation Ireland and the Irish Research Council.
