This guide covers how in-text citations and references should be formatted in the MLA Style, 9th Edition.

Images (painting, sculpture or photographs, etc.)


In-Text-Citation:
  • (Artist Last name)
Example:
  • This painting marks the artist's interest in expressionism (Yeats)….
  • Yeats shows his interest in expressionism….

Reference: 

Creator Last name, First name. Title of image/work. Date of Work, Name of Institution, Location.

Example:

Yeats, Jack B. The Liffey Swim. 1923, National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin.


In-Text-Citation:
  • (Artist Last name)
Example:
  • This painting portrays a gently smiling woman, while reclining on a draped sofa (Gloag).

Reference: 

Creator Last name, First name. Title of image/work. Date of Work. Title of website, URL.

Example: 

Gloag, Isobel. The Woman with the Puppets. 1915. Huge Lane Gallery, http://emuseum.pointblank.ie/online_catalogue/work-detail.php?objectid=619.


In-Text-Citation:
  • (Author Last name page no.)
Example:
  • Yeats' painting marks the artist's interest in expressionism (Quinlan 32 )….
  • Yeats shows his interest in expressionism….

Reference:

Creator Last name, First name. Title of image/work. Date of Work, Name of Institution, Location. Title of book, by author/editor, Publisher, Year, page number.

Example:

Yeats, Jack B. The Liffey Swim. 1923, National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin. The Works of Yeats, by Jane Quinlan, Oaktree Press, 2019, p. 32.
