Harvard Style Guide: Film/ television

This guide explains how to use the Harvard Style. It includes a short tutorial.

Film or television

Reference: Title of film (Year of distribution) Director [Format]. Place of distribution: Distribution company.

Example: The lives of others (2007) Florien Henckel von Donnersmarck [DVD]. Santa Monica: Lionsgate.

In-Text-Citation:

  • Title of film, Year
  • (Title of film, Year)

Example:

  • The portrait shown in The Lives of Others (2007)….
  • East Germany was the subject of a recent successful movie (The Lives of Others, 2007)….

Film on YouTube

Reference: Name of person posting video (Year video posted) Title of film or programme. Available at: URL (Accessed Day Month Year).

Example: APintTurtle (2008) Zig & Zag - Christmas crises. Available at: http://youtu.be/yCv4iyPqZKQ (Accessed 12 December 2014).

In-Text-Citation:

  • Poster's Last name (Year)
  • (Poster's Last name, Year)

Example:

  • Podge tries to foil Christmas in this Christmas special (APintTurtle, 2008)...
  • APintTurtle's (2008) posted a version of 'Zig & Zag - Christmas Crises'...

Streaming Services - Film (Netflix, Amazon Prime etc.)

Reference: Title of film (Year of distribution) Directed by. DOI or Available at: Name of streaming service (Accessed Day Month Year).

Example: The Truman Show (1998) Directed by Peter Weir. Available at: Netflix (23 July 2020).

In-Text-Citation:

  • Title of film, Year
  • (Title of film, Year)

Example:

  • The portrait shown in The Truman Show (1998)….
  • The portrait show has been described as a religious analogy (The Truman Show, 1998)….

Streaming Services - Series episode (Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.)

Reference: 'Title of episode' (if known) (Year of original broadcast) Title of Series, Series/Season, episode number. Production company. Available at: Name of streaming service (Accessed Day Month Year).

Example: 'Julian' (2017) The Sinner, Series 1, episode 1. Available at: Netflix (Accessed 23 July 2020).

In-Text-Citation:

  • 'Title of episode', Year
  • ('Title of episode', Year)

Example:

  • In the episode, 'Julian' (2017)….
  • In the episode 'Julian' we meet Harry Ambrose for the first time ('Julian', 2017)….
